programme

A Portuguese season of artists who use journeys, dislocations and imaginary nations as the inspiration and departure for their work.

Theatre events 3 May- 9 June at the Blue Elephant Theatre, Camberwell SE5
Visual arts 3 May- 30 June at the Blue Elephant Gallery, msdmSHOPPUB (Brixton Village Market) and in public locations in and around little Portugal in Stockwell SE9, South London

With: Teatro Praga, Patrícia Portela, Beatriz Cantinho, Cão Solteiro, Rogério Nuno Costa, Marília Maria Mira, Valentim Quaresma, Teresa Milheiro, Rodrigo Vilhena, Liavali Coquet, Mónica De Miranda, Paula Roush, Ana António Gill, Luís Torres, Nuno Luz

The projects share references to tourism, migration and new geographies, encouraging speculations about the existence of a third space: a hybrid territory developing from transnational encounters and cross-border dialogues embedded in the fabric of day to day life. The programme brings together for the first time Portuguese artists from Lisbon and living in the U.K.

EUROVISION
by Teatro Praga
Wednesday to Saturday
3,4, 5 and 6 May
at 7:45 pm
Duration: 50 minutes

Music and drama, dreams and disappointments… Teatro Praga presents Eurovision, a theatrical prelude to the cult Eurovision Song Contest final later in the month. With Eurovision, a performance of a particular view is proposed, an object as tremendous as Europe and at the same time as small as a ridiculous addiction. Each uttered word will signify a new world order and going back (in the game and in words) it’s giving all up. The borders are finally opened, and a construction of a narrative is trying to be held with the old continent as a starting point, a long and diced contest where only the best (of the best) wins. A multi-language performance in three moments: Past, Present and Future.
Performance by Martim Pedroso & Pedro
Penim, in a collaboration with Andre Teodósio,
Rogério Nuno Costa & Pedro Pires.

FLATLAND
by Patrícia Portela
Wednesday to Saturday
10, 11, 12, 13 May
at 7:45 pm
Duration: 45 minutes

The tragic story of a two-dimensional man who realises his life lacks a third dimension. He discovers that, through film and theatre, his existence in the three-dimensional world
is possible so long there are spectators to watch. Happy with the discovery but unhappy with the dependency, Flatman organizes a strategy to conquer his three-dimensional immortality. Flatland is a multimedia performance where letters, notes and images are projected on a 3°—4 mts book that you can read, hear and watch, transforming and moving, as the story unfolds. This visually stunning show was the Winner of the Acarte/Madalena Azeredo Perdigão Prize 2004, Portugal. A collaboration with Christoph de Boeck, Anton Skrzypiciel, Irmã Lucia & Helder Cardoso.

Singularity
by Beatriz Cantinho
Wednesday to Saturday
17, 18, 19, 20 May
at 7:45 pm
Duration: 50 minutes

A play with images, alternating between memories of times past and the present thoughts. Images of a body longing for desire and thriving in chaos and absurdity. A body refusing to conform with normality. Singularity is a physical piece of theatre which questions the philosophical concept of a “body without organs” through a language of dance and movement.Choreography: Beatriz Cantinho. Dramaturgy: Valério Romão. Performers: Ana Gouveia, Beatriz Cantinho. Set/costumes: Iñaki Zoilo. Stage Props: Tiago Neves. Lighting Design: José Manuel Rodrigues

Drama
(Five shipwrecks and a twilight)
by Cão Solteiro
Wednesday to Saturday
24, 25, 26, 27 May
at 7:45 pm
Duration: 90 minutes

Twilight, messages, the drowned, spectres, some gazes, echoes, unborn children, farewells, silent hate, the hanged, a tap dripping: the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle we use to draw our own dramas, at times bourgeois, domestic or somewhat romantic. Actors and text, without gimmicks or theories. Rafts, the Devil, sharks, old English songs, mothers, princes, princesses and the night’s black veil. A new play by Cão Solteiro based on texts
by Austro-Hungarian dramatist Odon Von Horvath, Eugene O’Neill & others. Directed by Miguel Loureiro. Cast: Paula Sá Nogueira e Paulo Lages Director: Miguel Loureiro. Costumes: Mariana Sá Nogueira. Set Design: Nuno Carinhas. Production Manager: José Manuel Rodrigues. Technician: André Gomes

ACTOR
by Rogério Nuno Costa
Wednesday to Saturday
31 May, 1, 2, 3 june
at 7:45 pm
Duration: 70 minutes

This performance is a reflection upon the border separating both realities, the actor’s and the dancer’s. A reflection made about the relation of theatre as a physical space and dance in the context of performative theatre. The ‘actor’ is the essence of this show, equipped with a body to move and act according to a script but also as a person with his own emotions, experiences and thoughts. The audience will be given a script upon arrival to the theatre, containing the actor’s personal journey. Devised and performed: Rogério Nuno Costa. Lighting Design:José Álvaro Correia. Set Design: F. Ribeiro. Video: Rui Ribeiro. Movement Assistant: Marina Nabais. Assistant Director: Miguel Pereira.

Marília Maria Mira
lives and works in Lisbon
Marília Mira combines performance and object-making with a humorous commentary to contemporary living. “Pela boca morre o peixe” (from the mouth dies the fish), belongs to a group of portraits playing with psychological stereotypes, and is also a reference to the aspirations of varied social groups dreaming of fame and money in a fast-changing country. From the mouth pieces mimicking social attitudes to the posed studio photography, the work engages with the staging of the persona as a performative sculpture.

Valentim Quaresma
lives and works in Lisbon
Transforms ordinary everyday objects revisiting nature and proto-industrial sites as a scavenger of forgotten souvenirs-in-ruins. His sense of the uncanny, sets him apart as a creator of wearable sculpture and body art. Has designed jewellery for Portuguese fashion designer Ana Salazar since 1999. Has also exhibited his work as installations, combining three-dimensional pieces with video and photography in layered narratives of spatial and bodily references. http://www.valentimquaresma.com

teresa Milheiro
lives and works in Lisbon
Creates wearable life systems reutilising animal bones and teeth within a new paradigm of objects for self-defence and survival. These are bio-jewels with a dual reference to antiquity and future, which have developed into interventive jewels, with a strong critical component, namely in reaction to current obsession with self-image, and the world economic leaders’ response to ecological crisis. This is visible in the survival kit, a prototype for the emergency conversion of urine into drinkable water. http://www.teresamilheiro.com

rodrigo Vilhena
lives and works in Lisbon
‘Solaris’ is a work in progress and it is about the painting process itself as a perpetual redrawing of boundaries. The unknown planet is recreated as an ocean of paintings floating in the immensity of the universe, “taking into consideration the desires hidden in the darkest recesses of our minds” (Stanislaw Lem– “Solaris”). Solaris’ interface between painting and display reveals Rodrigo’s double identity as an artist and curator of the Voyeur Project View, an alternative gallery located in the Anjos neighbourhood, in Lisbon. Solo exhibitions are shown to the public through a peephole in the door that can be accessed 24 hours a day. http://www.voyeurprojectview.org

liavali coquet
lives and works in Sheffield
Liavali Coquet has a dual background in philosophy and goldsmithing. This comes across in her research Chinese Rituals and Traditions: Looking Through the Female Eye between 960–1911 in China, which follows the history of foot-binding, where different issues surrounding the body come under scrutiny. Attempting to understand the female space, Liavali’s work concentrates on how and why this space is constructed and its repercussions on women’s bodies and their perceptions of the world they inhabit.

Mónica De Miranda
lives and works in London
Mónica’s work is rooted in a globalised culture, pushing boundaries and conventional notions of place and nation. At the core of her critical practice is an interest for the after-effects of colonisation on contemporary geographies and current flux of migratory movements. Projects such as ‘In between Lines’ – a participatory hand knitted luggage boat, with its references to both the Portuguese colonialism and women’s crafts-create cross cultural fertilisations, with diverse senses of identity and belonging. http://www.monicademiranda.com

paula roush
lives and works in London
Arphield recordings is a project documenting sound performed with rfid (arphid) technology, the radio frequency identification system used for access control and surveillance. The microchip inside each Oyster card tracks your journeys, beeping every time you enter or exit the tube. Join the mob at the Stockwell tube station for an impromptu sound jam/memorial using your oyster cards. 10 June 2006 at 14pm. Download the arphield recordings from http://odeo.com/channel/85358 and bring the sounds on a portable music player to experience a mix of live and prerecorded Oyster beeps.

ana antónio Gill
lives and works in London
Ana’s work spans from live performance pieces to art created using conventional methods such as craft based objects and installations. Many of her projects focus in the subjects of home and space, objects and identity, researching the relationship between humans and objects, and the spaces they inhabit. The Value of Memories is a performance using a real-life auction of sentimental objects to explore the emotional attachment to possessions in a public context. http://www.aagill.co.uk

luís torres
lives and works in London
Luís Torres has worked as artist in residence at London Metropolitan University, Sir John Cass Department of Art & Design at the Silversmithing, Jewellery and Allied Crafts department. His work explores issues relating to feelings, wishes, experiences of different societies and their forms of expression. Zoom is a collaboration with Bri Gastaldi and relates to the experience of immigration and dreams of a better life.

nuno luz
lives and works in Lisbon
Nuno’s ‘PPT.net - mobility without secrets’ is a project that explores the concept of “pocket-pt” or “Portugal in your pocket ”. What can you fit in? And how much do you leave out? Nuno has worked in graphic design identity for the last decade, namely as communication designer for Lisbon’s Experimenta Bienal of Design. Always in the search for the edge of design - the space for the mishap and unforeseen, his projects take place where the extra-ordinary meets the banal.
